SELF-CARE IS NOT SEXYMay 09, 2022
Have you had a long day at work and are looking forward to having a hot shower, binge-watching your favorite reality TV show, and indulging in a delicious pizza?
After all, you’ve worked hard all day, and you deserve it.
Well, I’d argue that you deserve more!
While you might think that eating pizza or having a warm bath is the perfect self-care night, it might not be as satisfying as it seems for your body, mind, and soul.
In this blog, I’ll explain why self-care is not supposed to be sexy but necessary to replenish your energy levels and become a better version of yourself.
Self-Care Is Not Self-Indulgence
I’ve been working in the personal development space for a while now, and I’ve come to realize that many people confuse self-care with self-indulgence.
What do I mean by that?
While self-indulgence, like having a hot bath or eating delicious ice cream in front of your favorite TV show feels great in the moment, it doesn’t have a long-term positive impact. Don’t get me wrong, indulging in whatever makes you happy every now and then is great.
But self-indulgence is all about instant gratification and little pleasures that momentarily boost your dopamine levels. The issue with that is that it doesn’t last and will only leave you craving for more after a while.
So, if you want to nourish your body and mind sustainably and grow and develop over time, you need to take a different approach and engage in self-care rather than self-indulgence.
What Is Self-Care?
Self-care is the action of implementing a set of habits that will allow you to be at your best, whether you’re chasing your dreams or going through tough challenges. It’s about identifying your own needs and ensuring you stick to a healthy routine to fulfill them, become a better version of yourself and successfully overcome adversity.
Now, the reality is that self-care is not always glamorous or sexy because habits are all about discipline, consistency and commitment.
Meditating, keeping up with your exercise routine, hydrating throughout the day, planning, and preparing healthy meals, going to bed on time everyday can all feel boring and even exhausting.
And that’s why so many struggle to start or continue with their self-care routines. It feels like a never-ending to-do list and can turn out to be burdensome.
However, when “sexy-ness” is missing, it’s crucial to change your perspective and always remember why self-care is so important.
Your self-care routine is the fuel that powers you through life. It’s a battery recharge if you will. And when you engage in self-care, you ensure you’re traversing your life journey fully charged to reach whatever destinations you want to reach!
Embrace The Unsexiness
Setting healthy habits and sticking to a routine is hard and sometimes boring but necessary if you want to thrive. A sports coach mentioned once that “what separates elite athletes from mediocre comes down to who can handle the boredom of training every day.” While motivation is what gets you started, you need the discipline, consistency and commitment to get going. It is important to embrace the unsexiness that comes with creating a routine that allows you to replenish the body and mind which only supports you in reaching your dreams and live a fulfilling life.
I hope this short blog shed some light about what self-care is and why it’s ok if you don’t always feel excited about doing it. By understanding the purpose of self-care and how it serves as our fuel to be your best, we can let go of the need to wanting our routines and rituals to be sexy. It’s ok to be bored. It’s ok to say “No” to things that sound more fun in order to say “Yes” to things that aren’t as exciting. It’s ok to get that side-look from people by telling them you go to bed at 9.30pm (Anyone? Only me?! Nevermind.).
When we embark into the journey of personal development, it does come with a sprinkle of unsexiness and it’s exactly what we need to serve as our best version. Always remember that slow and steady wins the race ;)
